About HO Scale Model Trains

HO scale model trains are very popular in the train hobby world. The name HO literally means half of O and this scale is 1:87, meaning that it is 1 87th the size of a real train. While there are many different scales to model trains, this scale is one of the most common. For this reason, there is an abundance of engines, cars, scenery, and track layouts for this size. It isn't hard to find individual pieces, DIY kits for building your own trains, or even ready-to-run sets.

When it comes to HO scale model trains, there are two major manufacturers. One of them is Bachmann, and the other Lionel. Both of these brands are well known for their quality products, how easy they are to work with, and the abundance of parts and accessories that are available. They are so close to each other as far as quality, that either one can be great for the beginner. The only real difference is in prices, but even in this area, it is close. Choosing between them really boils down to what you grew up playing with, and which brand you are most familiar with.

HO scale model trains also make some of the best layouts imaginable. You can choose old time layouts with steam engines that have real working headlamps and stacks that blow simulated smoke and have sounds that can be almost real. There is so much detail to these steam locomotives that you can almost imagine what it was like in the days of old, when these were the workhorses of Western civilization. You can also get modern diesel engines, and there are monorail styles too.

There are many different HO scale model trains sets to choose from. Some of the most popular ready-to-run sets are issued around the holidays, with these complete sets including enough track to go around the tree, and buildings that really light up. These are usually classic stream engines, with the lights and working smoke stacks. For sound effects you can find train sounds, or even Christmas music. Some sets may even come with little caroling figures, and all the sets are usually decorated in the colors of the holidays.

Here is just one of the regular HO scale model trains you can find online. The first is the Diesel Freight, Trans America Express Santa Fe F7. This set included the famous Santa Fe F7 diesel engine, with real working headlamp. You get six different cars, plus a caboose, and enough Power-Loc track to make a 47"x65" double oval track. In addition to this you also get two switch tracks that really work, a log dump so the kids can unload the logging car, three shanty tracks as well as a tunnel. You also get an assortment of signs and utility poles, and even a signal bridge. This is a wonderful starter set, all for under $165 retail, but in some online retailer it can be found for just $107.

There are also many different steam HO scale model trains sets available, some for under one hundred dollars. You can buy model trains from your local hobby shop, or other retailers, but if you want a wider selection, then you are better off going online.
