Bunk Beds Plans
After doing some considerable research on bunk beds plans, it appears that some experience in wood working is
necessary, and if you decide to design your own bunk beds plans, imagination wouldn’t hurt either. Some of the
suggested tools and items you’ll need once your plans are completed are: Table Saw, Dado Blade, Drill Press with a
three eights, half inch, and one inch set of Drill Bits. Router and Table with: quarter inch Round over Bit,
quarter inch straight Bit, and a half-inch Dovetail Bit.
If your skill level is less than the suggested tools would require, or you’re just not comfortable with using
them, there are bunk beds plans that require fewer skills and can still produce a sturdy and attractive piece of
furniture. Plans of this type would require little more than a jigsaw, screw drivers, an adjustable wrench and a
couple paint brushes.
Of course before we get into materials you must decide the space you’ll have available and the ceiling height, in
addition make sure there are no light fixtures or ceiling fans in the area you plan to put the bunk bed.
The construction of a basic bunk bed would require (approximately) the following: one piece of half inch by
three feet by six feet, one piece half inch by four feet by six feet, one piece half inch by four feet by seven
feet best quality exterior 2 good side plywood, two inch by two inch by 11 feet of lumber, two inch by four inch by
40 feet of lumber, (this lumber is for bunk rails and cleats), (4) one inch by four inch corner braces, (14) three
sixteenths by four inch carriage bolts with wing nuts, (8) three sixteenths by one inch stove bolts with wing nuts
and 4 furniture slides. The wing nuts are for portability, if for example you’re making the bed for a college
student, the bunk bed can be built at home, disassembled and easily transported and reassembled once you get to the
dorm.
There are bunk beds plans available that encompass the remodeling or redesigning of a plain, standard bunk bed,
you can make them appear as castle, or a fort, or anything else you can think of that will make your child happy;
you can even draw your own if you’re so inclined, just grab a piece of graph paper search the internet for some
ideas and start drawing.
Some bunk beds plans come in kits that include the plans, bed rail fasteners, post caps, ladder hooks, and
spindles; you’ll also get an excellent simple, succinct drawing displaying every joint for easy assembling and
lumber list as well. When you complete this bed you will have a safe error free well-constructed bed, with a proper
set of bunk beds plans.
If you intend to build a bed from bunk beds plans then, it’s imperative that you follow the safety guidelines
set forth by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
